    Melanocortin Receptor

CNS receptors that modulate sexual arousal, appetite, and pigmentation.

    Definition

Melanocortin receptors are referenced in the context of PT-141 (Bremelanotide), an FDA-approved melanocortin receptor agonist. PT-141 acts on MC3 and MC4 receptors in the central nervous system to modulate sexual arousal. This mechanism is distinct from PDE5 inhibitors (such as sildenafil), which act peripherally on blood flow rather than centrally on desire.
